Superwoman, superman, take off your cape

February 5, 2014

My Slaw column in January picked up on an important theme I have been exploring in my work and in my writing, namely, the trap of setting super hero expectations for ourselves in terms of volume and quality of our work, number of commitments we take on, and so on.  I personally ran headlong into this in the lead up to the December holiday period and ended the year with much to reflect on.  If you, like me, have a strict inner task master or mistress, please read on.

From the column:

On Christmas Eve, instead of happy dreams of sugar plums and nutcrackers I tossed and turned in bed battling inner demons that were determined to remind me of all my apparently innumerable short comings.

I was sick with a flu that left me weak and unable to carry out my fabulous plans for holiday entertaining. Adding insult to injury, I was left curled up on the couch clutching my cup of camomile tea and watching others sip from that bottle of California Cult Classic wine we had been saving.

Holiday photos this year feature me with tangled hair and dark circles under my eyes. Heck even my dog didn’t want to be seen with me!

How did this happen? I burned the candle at both ends. I attempted to be everything to everyone, exceed expectations, and…

Perfectionism and Procrastination – two upcoming events in November

October 20, 2013

I am excited to announce that next month I am co-presenting two on-line courses for Continuing Legal Education BC with Derek LaCroix QC:

Understanding and Overcoming Perfectionism
November 5, 2013 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (Pacific)
Here is a link to more information:  http://www.cle.bc.ca/onlinestore/productdetails.aspx?cid=978

Procrastination: Getting ahead of the habit that is leaving you behind
November 19, 2013; Time: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (Pacific)
To learn more: http://www.cle.bc.ca/onlinestore/productdetails.aspx?cid=979

This will be the second time Derek and I have worked together on these topics and we have reworked our content with the addition of more practical and actionable tips.

The presentations will be delivered via CLETV which is a live video broadcast available to anyone with access to a computer and an internet line anywhere in Canada or the US and each is good for 1 hour of CPD credits.

Here is some more information about each of these courses:

Understanding and Overcoming Perfectionism

•   Do you believe that anything less than a superb result is a failure?

•   When you receive compliments do you disqualify them because you know you don’t really deserve them?

•   Do you revise documents over and over again and have a hard time letting go?

Lawyers strive for excellence in their work and the legal culture encourages that. It can be difficult to distinguish a healthy desire to do the best job possible from the potentially harmful effects of perfectionism. The pursuit of perfection can come at a high cost, and can lead to negative results.

In this course you will learn what perfectionism is all about, how to recognize it in yourself, and how to evaluate where you are on the spectrum. Perfectionism can help us to achieve heights of performance but left unchecked can cause us a great deal of anxiety and lead to performance deficits. Join us for this CLE-TV and take the first step towards understanding and acting on the perfectionism that could be dragging you down. “The perfect is the enemy of the good”— Voltaire.

Procrastination:  Getting ahead of the habit that is leaving you behind

Are your days filled with urgent deadlines and competing client demands? Do you find it almost impossible to set aside time for important projects before they become smoking hot fires on your desk? Do you find it hard to get to the least interesting items on your to-do-list? Do you feel stressed over matters you haven’t “gotten” to? One of the most common challenges faced by lawyers is procrastination. With so many competing priorities it is all too easy to get caught up in a cycle of just-in-time work product. This session will introduce the most common forms of procrastination, examine the most frequently occurring pitfalls, and provide you with a series of tips and a self-coaching practice that can help you to break free of the procrastination cycle.

I hope you can join us – the topics might be serious but Derek and I promise an enjoyable and engaging session!

Making the shift from perfectionism to the pursuit of excellence

June 19, 2013

I had the opportunity to co-present for CLEBC on the topic of dealing with perfectionism with Derek LaCroix, QC, Executive Director of the Lawyers Insurance Program of BC. Derek and I enjoyed working together and so are going to offer another on-line presentation on this topic for CLEBC in November. This time we are going to focus on providing more in the way of actionable tips for the viewers.

To give you a taste for what we will be talking about here is a link to an article that I wrote for Slaw.ca this month.

Bottom line is that I encourage all perfectionists out there to choose to make the shift away from perfectionism and towards excellence. Often it takes support, and some focused and consistent effort, but the good news is, it is a truly achievable goal.
